Enforceable undertaking accepted from E.B. Mawson and Sons Pty Ltd

The Resources Regulator has accepted a work health and safety (WHS) enforceable undertaking from E.B. Mawson and Sons Pty Ltd (Mawsons) in relation to an incident that occurred at the Western Riverina Quarry near Rankin Springs.

The incident involved two workers who were conducting an oil change on a cone crusher and determined that they needed to remove a build-up of dust/sludge from the oil reservoir. The workers used rags and brake cleaning fluid. During this process one of the workers used a hand-held, battery-powered blower to clean the area. The blower was turned off for a short time before being turned on again to repeat the task, at which time airborne brake cleaner droplets ignited and both workers suffered burns.

An investigation resulted in the Regulator alleging Mawsons contravened the WHS Act in respect to this incident.

On 27 October 2025, Mawsons submitted a signed WHS undertaking to the Regulator, which has been accepted, that includes:

  • funding projects for the benefit of workers, the industry and local community in the minimum sum of $360,254
  • paying the Regulator $33,063 for investigation costs and professional fees.
