NSW Resources is inviting stakeholders to comment on the ongoing use of filter self-rescuers (FSRs) in underground mines and the suitability of alternative self-rescue options.
FSRs are currently used in underground mining operations to assist workers to self-escape during emergencies involving smoke and carbon monoxide. While they continue to play an important role in emergency response, NSW Resources is seeking stakeholder feedback on whether they remain the most appropriate self-rescue device for underground mining environments.
A discussion paper released for consultation examines the capabilities and limitations of FSRs, including that they do not function in oxygen-deficient or toxic atmospheres. It also explores potential alternatives, including Self-Contained Self-Rescuers (SCSRs) and Compressed Air Breathing Apparatus (CABA).
Stakeholder feedback is being sought on:
- the most effective escape apparatus to maximise workers' chances of safely reaching a place of refuge when escaping through an irrespirable or toxic atmosphere
- whether the current FSR-based approach can be improved to address known limitations
- whether the costs and practical impacts of discontinuing FSRs would be outweighed by the benefits of an alternative approach.
The consultation will help inform consideration of future self-rescue requirements for underground mining operations in NSW.
