Resources Regulator investigating illegal fossicking

The Resources Regulator is continuing investigations across the Rocky River area near Uralla following reports of illegal fossicking.

The investigations follow unannounced inspections held across the area in April where illegal equipment including water pumps, winches, mechanised sluices and hoses were found.

Inspections focused on the Wooldridge Recreation and Fossicking Reserve managed by Uralla Shire Council, and areas downstream of the reserve along crown waterway where fossicking is restricted.

While fossicking is a lawful activity in NSW, fossicking outside of approved areas and with power operated equipment is prohibited.

The use of powered equipment can cause significant damage to the environment, erode creek beds and destroy native ecosystems.

Anyone witnessing suspected illegal fossicking is urged to contact the Resources Regulator on 1300 814 609.
