Regulator begins investigation after worker was hit by a conveyance in a mine shaft

The Resources Regulator in NSW has launched an investigation after a worker was struck on the head by a conveyance in a winder shaft on 8 May 2025.

The incident occurred at Appin Mine in Menangle, NSW. At the time of the incident, the worker was attempting to provide verbal instructions to a mucker operator at a lower level. To communicate with the mucker operator, the worker extended his head and upper body through a hatch in modified guarding on the stage kibble well. The hatch was not interlocked with the winder control system. The worker suffered minor injuries to the neck and head.
