On 18 June 2025, geoscientists, industry professionals, and history enthusiasts gathered for the Geological Survey of NSW Symposium in Newcastle to mark a major milestone - 150 years of geological exploration and innovation.
From keynote talks to lively networking, the event honoured the Survey’s remarkable legacy while looking boldly toward the future.
The event was highlighted by an address from Melissa Harris PSM, CEO of Geoscience Australia. It also saw the launch of a new Metallogenic Map of NSW which summarises 15 years’ worth of advances in the understanding of the major mineral systems in NSW.
The latest Quarterly Note was also released, which defines the geological provinces and tectonic cycles/events in NSW as a framework for the NSW Seamless Geology dataset.
Milestones such as the discovery of Broken Hill, pioneers of geological mapping in NSW, the history of airborne geophysics acquisition in NSW and celebrating the passion and dedication of our people were all celebrated throughout the day.
