Resources Regulator brings industry together for Mine Rehabilitation Forums

The Resources Regulator has hosted two successful Mine Rehabilitation Forums, bringing together mine operators and rehabilitation specialists to strengthen the state’s approach to responsible mine closure.

More than 280 people attended the events in Newcastle and Dubbo in February.

Held as part of the Regulator’s ongoing commitment to improving rehabilitation outcomes, the forums created a space for open discussion, practical learning and collaboration across the sector.

Attendees explored how regulatory expectations, industry innovation and transparent reporting can work together to lift rehabilitation performance across NSW.

Highlights included:

  • Hearing from leading experts from industry, academia and government to discuss rehabilitation and compliance and share practical knowledge to continue lifting the standard of mine rehabilitation across the state.
  • Outlining the Regulator’s 2026 compliance priorities, giving industry clear expectations for the year ahead. This included updates on the rollout of the new Rehabilitation Cost Estimate (RCE) Tool.
  • Industry and inspectors workshopped real-world challenges, such as:
    • how operators can work more effectively to track and deliver progressive rehabilitation
    • how Targeted Assessment Programs (TAPs) are helping to monitor compliance and better understand site performance over time.
