Mine truck drivers reminded to always stay alert

The Resources Regulator has released a safety video and alert reminding truck drivers to always follow onsite speed limits and stay alert when operating heavy vehicles.

The reminder follows a recent incident at an opencut coal mine. A driver operating a Hitachi 3,500 haul truck failed to follow the site’s crest and ramp speed limits. As a result, the truck went into overspeed and hit the centre island causing it to roll onto its side.

During the incident, the driver also failed to use the service (emergency brake) to bring the truck back under control.

The driver was wearing a seatbelt, and although they needed to be extricated from the cabin, they were not injured.

A subsequent review confirmed that the mine’s heavy vehicle infrastructure, including the ramp and intersection, complied with safety requirements.

Additional recommendations from the incident suggest mine operators conduct regular crest and ramp speed audits and review speed monitors.
