The Resources Regulator has recently completed a series of investigations into suspected illegal fossicking activity across several locations in NSW, including Gilmore Creek near Tumut, Rocky Creek Bridge in the Pennsylvania State Forest near Bathurst and Orange, and Wallaby Rocks near Sofala.
The investigations were conducted in collaboration with several government agencies, following reports of fossickers using prohibited equipment in these areas. As a result, enforcement action has been taken against individuals identified during the investigations.
Fossicking, the collection of gemstones, minerals or gold for recreational purposes, is permitted in NSW, but strict rules apply to protect the environment and ensure safe practices.
Only hand-operated tools are allowed, such as gold pans, sieves, small shovels, pickaxes and metal detectors. The use of power-operated equipment is prohibited, as it can cause significant damage to creek beds, waterways and surrounding ecosystems.
Prohibited equipment includes items such as jackhammers, water pumps, motorised trommels, bulldozers, backhoes and excavators.
People found using unauthorised equipment may face fines of up to $750, with repeat offences potentially leading to prosecution. Inspectors also have the authority to seize prohibited equipment.
The Regulator reminds fossickers to follow the rules and respect the environment when enjoying recreational activities across NSW.
