Industry assistance unit, Mine Safety
The Mining Industry Assistance Unit (IAU) is an initiative of the Mine Safety Advisory Council (MSAC) and was established in 2009 to assist the mining and extractives industry to achieve World-leading OHS.
The IAU works with the MSAC to develop and deliver integrated education and assistance programs directly to the mining industry. A variety of programs are available including group workshops and individual site assistance. These services are available to all organisations involved in mining and extractives including ancillary mining services.
The programs will support existing industry standards including:
- Consultation
- Contractor management
- Fatigue Management
- The development of a Health Management Plan
- Management of musculoskeletal disorders and
- OHS management systems.
Other programs being developed by the IAU will target OHS culture as well as Associated Non-Technical Skills such as leadership in safety, communication, situation awareness, decision making and team work.
The IAU aims to identify and understand barriers to effective OHS system implementation in industry, and design and deliver education and assistance to improve OHS practice. The ultimate aim is to help industry meet its agreed goal of achieving a world leading OHS culture.
