Explanatory notes for the Koonenberry Belt geological maps
The 528-page Bulletin 35 includes descriptions, stratigraphic sections and distribution maps for rock units through the belt, plus specialist sections on geophysics, structure, metamorphism, geochemistry, mineral systems and palaeontology. The book contains over 130 photos, 200 figures and 90 tables. A total of 497 units have been mapped, including 72 new, formally defined units. New and revised age constraints have lead to an improved understanding of the stratigraphy and the timing of deformational and extensional events in the belt. A geological synthesis of the Koonenberry Belt incorporates all aspects of the geological and tectonic history of the region.
The Koonenberry Belt is a curvilinear package of Neoproterozoic to Cenozoic rocks and cover sequences in northwest NSW. The Koonenberry Belt records features of major orogenic cycles in NSW, including the Cambrian Delamerian Orogen. The Koonenberry Belt is prospective for a range of commodities including orogenic-Au, volcanic massive sulfide hosted Cu, orthomagmatic-Ni and epithermal base metal mineralisation. The belt is under-explored by modern exploration methods.
Bulletin 35 will be invaluable to exploration geoscientists in the area, to researchers investigating tectonic reconstructions of eastern Australia through the last 600 million years, and to members of the general public interested in the landscapes of the region.
The explanatory notes of Bulletin 35 accompany a series of twenty-two geological maps in the Koonenberry Belt (twelve 1:100 000 and four 1:25 000 geological maps; two 1:250 000 solid geology interpretation maps and four 1:100 000 regolith maps). Publication of these map products and a DVD data package will be staged throughout 2010 and early 2011. The publication of the explanatory notes, maps and DVD is a culmination of 15 years of work by the Geological Survey of New South Wales in the Koonenberry Belt.
